Carlton Patterson
Producer. Reggae, roots, dub
- Active
- 1972-1982
- Also known as
- Black & White
Carlton Patterson ran the Black & White label, one of the outlets for the first King Tubby dub sides of 1972 to 1974. Eric K. Arnold calls him "a bit more obscure" than Tubby, who engineered the recordings Patterson made in Waterhouse between 1974 and 1982.
Larry Marshall, newly out of Studio One, met him as a young man starting his label, taught him "the way of things," and helped him arrange his sessions. Marshall recorded "I Admire You" for him at Randy's, and Tubby mixed its dub, "Watergate Rock" (1974), one of the first dubs to carry Tubby's name on the label and, in Marshall's view, the record that established that name with the public. The Rough Guide rates the I Admire You album as Marshall's best work after Brentford Road.
U-Brown, Mikey Dread and Sugar Minott also recorded for Patterson. Black & White 45s carried vocals by Horace Andy, Barrington Levy, Sugar Minott, Barry Brown, Trinity, Dillinger, I-Roy and Eek-A-Mouse with Tubby dubs on the B-sides, and in 2007 the label's dubs were collected as Black and White in Dub, with Ansel Collins's organ on "Zone Dub" and Bobby Kalphat's melodica on "Liberation Front" among its features.
