Daweh Congo

Artist. Roots

Active
1990s-present
Also known as
Rohan Graham

Daweh Congo is a Bobo dread singer of the 1990s Rasta renaissance whose chanting style the Rough Guide likens to the vintage chants of Burning Spear and Sylford Walker. He accepts the comparison: "I quite like it because it is true."

Born Rohan Graham, the son of the singer Leo Graham, he recorded in the early 1990s for African Star, Andrew Nash and Kariang without much notice, and came to attention in 1995 with "Study Garvey," "No Peace" and "Coconut Chalice," produced by Barry O'Hare. His debut album, Militancy (1997), issued by O'Hare through the Dutch label Runn Records on X-Rated riddims, was hailed as a modern roots classic, and the Rough Guide counts him among the vocalists "poised for greater acclaim," with Jah Cure and Norris Man.

Earth Runnings (1999), produced and mixed by Gaylord Bravo at Leggo's studio in Kingston over Roots Radics riddims, followed, and Guidance (2000) came out in Britain on Charm. He has also recorded with British roots outfits working with visiting Jamaican singers, and Earth Runnings was reissued in 2024 as Human Rights & Justice.
