- Active
- 2011-present
- Also known as
- Kelissa McDonald
Kelissa is a roots singer of the revival generation, counted among the young conscious artists alongside Protoje, Jah9 and Chronixx. Gardy Stein writes of her "sweet and soft vocals."
Born Kelissa McDonald into a musical family, she is the daughter of Errol and Kerida McDonald, lead singers of the roots band Chakula, and sang as a child on her parents' children's album Save the World. She was writing and recording her own songs in her early teens, lived for about three years in Tanzania, studied liberal arts at Whittier College in Los Angeles, and turned to music full time after leaving school in 2011. After a run of singles she released the album Spellbound, and she has toured the United States, Europe and Britain. She sings on "Take Me Home," the Afrobeats-tinged track on Hempress Sativa's album Charka, which was also Hempress Sativa's first production.
