Papa San

Also known as
Pastor Thompson, Tyrone Thompson

Papa San (Tyrone Thompson) was one of the most consistent deejays of the ragga years, known for rapid-fire chat, clever arguments and witty lyrics, who left the dancehall in 1997 to become a gospel performer and pastor.

He came up on Lee's Unlimited sound, often alongside the young Beenie Man. Busta Rhymes has said that a 1986 clash between Papa San and Lieutenant Stitchie was "the first time I saw speed rap," and that it sent him off to learn the style. In the late 1980s he was recorded by Gussie Clarke, who otherwise rarely cut deejays, including "Twice My Age" with Lady G, and the pair also had "Legal Rights," a saga of domestic strife, for Winston Riley. His self-produced "Strange" (1991) was a big hit, and he went on to cut inventive 45s for Sly and Robbie, Jack Scorpio, Bobby Digital, Steely and Clevie and Fatis Burrell; No Place Like Home (1995), produced by Burrell, showed him still making some of the best deejay records around. His brother Dirtsman, who had made his name with "Hot This Year," had his life taken in 1993; on Bobby Digital's album of the "Drum Song" riddim that carried his brother's hit, Papa San's "Run the Route" made the same kind of claim for himself.

At the height of his success, in 1997, he announced that he was giving his life to Christ. He became a pioneer of gospel dancehall, touring as far as Uganda and Nigeria, and has led his own church in Florida.
