Eustace Hamilton

Thriller U (Eustace Hamilton) is a romantic singer who, with Sanchez, became one of the most popular performers of the digital era; the Rough Guide finds in him a more self-effacing, vulnerable personality, which a large audience preferred to the hardcore deejays.

He was raised at Mount Moreland, Sligoville, in St. Catherine. He auditioned at King Tubby's, where Tubby's right-hand man Phantom passed him, and in 1987 Fatis Burrell recorded him for Vena along with Pinchers and Sanchez. At King Jammy's studio he cut an album, Waiting for You, and its cover of Julio Iglesias and Stevie Wonder's "My Love," on the riddim of Frankie Paul's "I Know the Score," reached the Jamaican top twenty, did well in England and became a dubplate anthem for Stone Love. He also sang the soundboy boast "My Sound Is the Ruling Sound" for Jammy, and recorded for Trevor "Uncle T" James, Donovan Germain's Penthouse and Redman.

His covers of Michael Bolton, Gregory Abbott, Billy Ocean and George Michael kept him outside the crossover market, the Rough Guide says, but in the reggae market his records never failed to sell, and his combinations with the deejay Johnny P were popular.
