Charlie Chaplin
Artist. Dancehall
- Active
- 1980-present
Richard Patrick Bennett, who performs as Charlie Chaplin, was among the most popular deejays in Jamaica in the first half of the 1980s and did it entirely on cultural material, at the moment when slackness was taking over the dancehall.
He was nicknamed after the comedian in childhood rather than adopting the name as a stage handle, which was the more common practice among deejays of the period. His career began in 1980 on U-Roy's King Sturgav Hi-Fi, the same sound that produced Brigadier Jerry, Josey Wales, and Ranking Joe, and he built his reputation there as a live performer before recording much. The Rough Guide hears "the unmistakable influence of U-Roy's tone and phrasing" in his style, and it counts him and Josey Wales as the two deejays who most seriously rivaled Yellowman.
Roy Cousins produced his debut, Red Pond, in 1982, and several further albums over the next three years. The contrast between his subject matter and that of his contemporaries was direct enough that it was made into a record: Slackness vs Pure Culture, a 1984 clash album with Yellowman. Que Dem followed in 1985, and "Diet Rock," "Unity Is Strength," and "Naw Leave Me Chalwa" are among the singles.
He later founded the Crown Production label. Jamaica awarded him the Order of Distinction in 2013.

Notes
- Steve Barrow and Peter Dalton, The Rough Guide to Reggae, 3rd ed. (London: Rough Guides, 2004), 258, names him and Josey Wales as "the two deejays most seriously to rival Yellowman" and says he stuck "to a strictly cultural approach, even when this was not at all fashionable," though his talent "has never been rewarded with major Jamaican hits"; Lloyd Bradley, This Is Reggae Music: The Story of Jamaica's Music (New York: Grove Press, 2001), 506, says he "kept it cultural."
- Wikipedia, citing Colin Larkin's Virgin Encyclopedia of Reggae, says he had been nicknamed after the comedian since his youth, whereas deejays of the era commonly named themselves after film stars. The Rough Guide contrasts his name with the "hard" movie name of his Stur-Gav partner Josey Wales. Barrow and Dalton, Rough Guide to Reggae, 259.

- The Rough Guide says his "most successful period" was with George Phang, for whom he cut "probably his most popular tunes, 'Que Dem' and 'Diet Rock'"; the album Que Dem appeared on Powerhouse, and "Naw Leave Me Chalwa" was a minor hit on his debut album.
