Ky-Mani Ronald Marley is a singer, deejay, and actor, the son of Bob Marley and the table tennis champion Anita Belnavis, and one of the eleven Marley children.
He moved with his mother to Miami as a boy and grew up in an American inner-city household rather than in the reggae aristocracy. "My dad is my dad," he has said. "I'm Ky-mani from a different time, a different era." Sports came before music; he took piano and guitar lessons at his mother's insistence, played trumpet in his high school band, and started out rapping and deejaying. His first single was "Unnecessary Badness."
He signed to Clifton Dillon's Shang Records and recorded his debut, Like Father Like Son (1996), an album of his father's songs, with Robbie Shakespeare on bass. Singles from the period included "Judge Not" with Patra and "Dear Dad," which topped the British reggae chart. In 1997 he sang on "Avenues," the Refugee Camp All-Stars and Pras recut of Eddy Grant's "Electric Avenue," and recorded with P.M. Dawn after signing to Gee Street. The Journey (1999) drew on a wide production roster, Salaam Remi, Morgan Heritage, Tony "CD" Kelly, Willie Lindo, and Denroy Morgan among them. Many More Roads (2001) was nominated for the reggae Grammy and lost to his brother Damian's Halfway Tree. Milestone (2004), Radio (2007), and Maestro (2015) followed, along with Conversations (2016), a full album made with the German singer Gentleman.
His acting work includes lead roles in Shottas (2002), the Jamaican gangster film that became a cult item on video without much theatrical release, and One Love (2003). He has also recorded with Farruko, Pitbull, and Dirty Heads.
He owns the football club Falmouth United and runs the Maestro Marley Cup, a tournament combining football and music, and his ties to the town he was born in have remained close.
